I’ve been calling myself an artist for a long time, even though I grew out of classical photography: film, the darkroom, hand processing, hand printing, paper photographs, red safelights. It was my way of living inside the image - and it still sets my pace today.
I’ve always loved faces. But at some point I realized I wasn’t making “beautiful portraits” - I was collecting traces of presence. That’s why I think in series: as if I’m building an archive of what truly was, and what will never repeat itself.
I work with large format film, including 18x24 cm. In today’s constant digital noise, it’s my way of making an image heavier and quieter - so it doesn’t shout, it holds.
Honesty, beauty, and a sense of timelessness are the three things without which I don’t understand why we should look at photography at all.
Alongside photography, I also make sculpture and work with porcelain. This website focuses primarily on photography, but the practice is one and the same to me: about the human being, about memory, about the form of life.
I’m currently based in Moscow.
